A bunch of little windows floating around on the desktop unmanaged by the program is a big productivity holdback too, no matter how many monitors you have... even the Gimp developers have finally given in and come up with a single-window version. I agree that the 1995-style MDI in use here causes problems sometimes -- on my 13" notebook screen, I frequently find myself scrolling all over the place to find windows whose default placement is meant for desktop resolutions, not ultralight notebook resolutions. But some more modern kind of MDI, such as a docking interface a la Eclipse, Kdevelop or Gambas (or the latest Gimp), would probably make all our lives a little easier. We already have some of this courtesy of the left bar with the projects, instruments, etc. Moving instrument windows, project notes, etc. into a dock on the right would be another step in that direction. Of course, in those other programs it's easy to see what the central focus of the window should be -- code or a picture. For me the central focus of an LMMS window would be either the piano roll, the song window or both. And it's easy for me to make a suggestion like this when I haven't done Qt programming since porting a Qt2 app to Qt3 about 5 years ago, and barely have enough free time to use LMMS, much less rewrite its UI.
