Which brings me to another point in favor of mailing lists that I forgot to
include in my original screed: mailing lists give each member control over
how he can read the list. Threading vs. no threading, signatures vs. no
signatures, show quotes or hide them, new posts at the top or at the bottom
or sorted some other way altogether, attachments displaying or not (if the
list allows attachments), etc. With a forum, the operator of the forum has
that control and your only options, if they're present at all, usually
consist of which stylesheet to use or whether to use a (usually
proprietary, often costs money) mobile app. Certainly you have no control
over the use of HTML, since in the end you're reading a webpage.

I like control, myself.

There are several options for both reading and participating in lmms-devel
on the web, but there'd be virtually none for participating in a forum via
email. Use Nabble if you really can't handle enabling threads in your mail
client or pressing "n" or "k" or clicking for each message. I consider the
lack of threading to be a feature, myself, not a bug.
