Agreed. The counter argument I had was: You wonder why you have no sound on 
your channel, and trying to find the guilty effect, you think the peak 
controller can not be the reason, since it is supposed to be a 
read-only-effect. But yes, I think being able to mute seems more generic.

I used this until now, but that way, it gets more comfortable.

Anyways, if no one else thinks that point 3 is a bad idea, I'll submit a patch 
the next days.
