I think the recommendation you are making is to allow some more of the
keyboard keys to act as the piano roll keyboard, "[ = ]"

+1, as I hit these keys anyway and they never make a sound! :)

I don't know how common these keys are across all keyboards, but I find my
self hitting them on the standard US keyboard all the time.
