Poking at stuff until it surprisingly works is an old and widely used  
method of software development. I suspect a lot of people do it that  
way (I know I'm one of them).

That Python thing might be more relevant if someone had mentioned how  
C++ didn't have templates back when they first learned it. And how you  
had to punch your code on cards, wait until the operator had compiled  
and run your program, and then get an error message on a printout.
