The problem with that is they are a commercially backed entity no? or at
least a non profit organization.

I recently contacted the Pidgin team about the re-branding effort from
Gaim - Pidgin.
Although their incentives were legally driven (they were given an
ultimatum about changing the name by a large corporation), the site
redesign, new bug tracker, new emoticons, name, logo, color theme was
all very well coordinated.
When asked how they did it, they said they had a surprisingly high
amount of commercial help.
