I remember that discussion. Thinking about it "input instruments" seams
like a good solution. Especially if the instrument definitions of the
"output instruments" can be used.

Thinking some more about it ... for midi tracks I don't think we need
to separate between input and output instruments. It doesn't make sense
to record controllers that your synthesizer/plugin/whatever can't
playback anyway.

How is the audio automation done now? Now you can open the piano roll
even for audio tracks and record/draw controller values? If so all that
would be needed seems to be a possibility to assign a midi instrument.
With no instrument assigned it should be safe to assume standard GM
ctrlrs ...
