Yes I think it's the right term.

Actually I think this is the way it is supposed to work.

There is no direct relation between markers and tempo changes, meaning that
you can add markers without doing any changes at all. Or remove them, which
is likely what happened even if it was not intentional.
By the way, markers can also be added by shift-clicking on the time-ruler
(shift-right-click to remove)

If you look in the Edit->Mastertrack->List you can see all events in the
song. Here the tempo signature is still visible because removing the marker
does not remove the tempo change.
