Oh man, I know! That's funny I agonized over it too. 

Nursery colours!
Free the oranges! Free the oranges!

I thought carefully about it and I know that orange is a good contrast 
 with grey. It is rather pleasing I think, if one can just get one's mind 
 into it...  Might get sick of it later...

But also, since it is beside the meters I need something NOT blue.
And green... meh, I'm tired of too much green...

The orange goes especially good with the blue meters and grey, I think.

And, uh, try these thought experiments: 

"Output range" = "Orange"

"Pan" = "Green" = Peter Pan's clothing

"Property" = "Purple"  = Purple properties, dude!

I considered brown for "Pan" as in the french "Pain" or bread.

Silly as hell, but I did consider these as memory aids :-)
