I don't know how people work with soundfonts, but I noticed, that many
soundfonts are "over complete". If all I need is
that upright piano, I don't want to load hundreds of megabytes with other
instruments, which I currently don't need, or
where I have good enough sounds already.

I actually noticed that I was pushing Muse to its memory limits by using large
soundfonts. I also got rid of all ladspa
plugins, by changing the plugin path to "/tmp" (when I deleted all directories
in the path, the defaults show up again
the next time muse starts). Before that muse took minutes to start.

So I was thinking about compiling my own soundfonts by taking the best presets
from whatever I can find. If I do this, I
might as well give those presets a name to my liking and I might call it
"Piano/Upright". It should be easy for muse to
use this syntax for grouping patches.

The drawback of course is that this puts a bit too much meaning into a patch
name and that most soundfonts will not use
this feature. It is just non standard. Then again, editing a soundfont file and
renaming all the patches is no more work
than writing an idf file.
