By “add counters”, the intention was simply to add some periodic statistics for “normal” (i.e. live traffic) mode and summary statistics for the “stream” (i.e. standalone test) mode to make it easier to determine what’s happening if something isn’t working correctly. By “tracing”, I had hoped to add the ability to dump packets to the screen at various points in the packet processing, and have that controlled by a command line option. And you are correct on the order verification, verify packets are kept in order during crypto processing.
