Hi, I like to think that people participate in LoCo's in part, because they feel they have an opportunity to contribute, and to learn. One hopes they're already on board with the CoC, the philosophy, etc. and have ha some exposure to civilized society. When one talks about the moderated IRC discussion I hear "Cathedral" not "Bazaar" which goes counter to m thinking. If someone's being a real jerk, can't an op just kick that person out? Is muzzling the majority really necessary? E-mail serves as a forum for uninterrupted speech / grand-standing / soapboxing. But IRC to me is about discussion, conversation, interaction, not "Shaddup, sit down, and listen". (I know that's an unfair characterization of moderation.) Sure, with everyone having a voice, it can get heated, chaotic, etc. But other IRC meetings seem to work okay that way (although I confess it can be a bit tiring at times).
So, I say -1 to moderation...
