Being one of the contacts for the Cypriot Ubuntu LoCo team, I have been asked in the past when the team was shaping up, what would we do about the language spoken on the forums and about the two communities speaking Greek and Turkish. The official languages are English, Greek, as well as Turkish.
To anyone who isn't informed about the Cypriot problem, the island was invaded by Turkey/Turkish troops (my topic is not that, read the wiki page [1]). There was inter-communal violence commited by both sides, and the point I want to note is that the problem as you see is rather political and a matter of trust. On the one hand, I don't want to restrict their liberty of free speech, but on the other hand, when it comes to understanding each other using Greek and Turkish.. we might have a problem in the long run, when Turkish-Cypriots decide to join (Until now, we have only Greek-Cypriots members, except for an original translator, who I cannot find anymore). As it is now, the forum (maintained by two truly active persons) is allowed Greek, English and Turkish [2] and I have set the mailing list rules to be strictly expressed in English for announcement kind of type messages, whereas support/questions are allowed in one of the three languages [3] Regarding when to allow Greek/Turkish being spoken at the forum and how to control them furthermore.. any ideas or anyone with similar experience?
