We are using these features extensively but find them awkward to use. 
However, they are very useful as they put all the log messages in one 
place - which makes documentation for operational staff easier to deal 
with. We tend to only ever produce an English messages file, and it 
would be a sizable  effort for us if support was now dropped and we had 
to embed the messages directly or come up with another mechanism.

My preference would be, if possible, leave the feature available but 
deprecated - maybe by setting a compiler flag to enable usage (opposite 
to Java I know, but not sure you can get the range of C++ compilers to 
generate warnings about deprecated features in a straightforward 
manner).
