Thanks a lot for your response Jacob. Finally, I've found the test case 'test3' in the test suite that shows how to set up a rolling file appender with file compression. Basically the solution consists in using the 'log4cxx/rolling/rollingfileappender.h' instead of the 'log4cxx/rollingfileappender.h' header file, and then to create rolling and triggering policies and to pass them to the appender.
