Anyone who has used log4j for a while has thought, "If it only had an
appender that could do this, that and the other." The needs are often
valid, but also quite diverse.

I think that Ceki has developed a creative compromise between the need to
disseminate useful additions/extensions to log4j on the one hand and the
need to keep the project somewhat manageable on the other: namely the
contributions directory. By far the most common contribution to log4j is
the "appender of the week". Leos' TempFileAppender demonstrated yet
another case of an appender which seemed, in isolation, rather bizzare.
But once the context of the problem was provided, one's reaction becomes,
"Oh, yeah. I can see that."

Even though Jakarta products as a whole are "Use at your own risk," to
absolve contributors from liability; the log4j contribution directory
carries with it an added degree of absolution to facilitate management of
the project as a whole. Even so, I've noticed several instances (mostly
in the Log4j-User mailing list) where questions about contributions are
asked, answered or otherwise addressed. This ensures the contributions are
a reasonable source of unique, but useful, solutions rather than a dump for
toxic code.
