Hi Jim,
You're right about extensibility being inhibited by many data/method
members being package level accessible instead of protected. Gradually,
these are being rooted out. When I was writing the appserver example last
Christmas, I was mailing Ceki every day to make yet another field/method
protected. However, I found that requests like "please make xxx protected
so I can override/access it in a subclass" had the quickest turn-around
time. Hopefully you shouldn't again be required to go through the pain you
went through with the SMTPAppender modifications.
