This should be asked on the users list - the developers list is for 
those who develop log4j.

To answer your question - log4j-core is a subset of log4j, and is used 
in environments where you do not wish to distribute the entire log4j jar.

I think that there is some documentation on the website regarding the 
differences, or you could just open the jar file and look at the 
different classes.

You would only need one or the other in your classpath.
