Interestingly enough, the problem you mention is fairly well known. See for example http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/? t=103228919500003&r=1&w=2 While what you suggest makes some sense, another solution is to use forward slashes instead of back slash or two backslahes instead of a single one when specifying the file name.
