Upon further investigation, I only get this error when running Tomcat in debug mode with the sysdeo plugin for eclipse (Tomcat 5, Eclipse 3.0). I think it is a classloader problem in Sysdeo (saw a post online of someone who had the same idea). When running Tomcat in standalone mode with the same app I do not get a ThreadDeath, so Im fine with closing this bug... Sorry for the inconvenience...
