Reverting Appender interface

The recent breaking change to the Appender interface had no or little 
discussion before being committed.  I do not think it is desirable to 
break existing implementations of Appender without such a discussion.

I'd like to propose attempting to restore the Appender interface to its 
previous state.  I think it is likely this could be done without 
reverting all the changes to the appender implementations with 
appropriate redirection in AppenderSkeleton.
