It is apparent that there are clear ways to avoid incompatibility and make improvements to appenders at the same time. The suggestions by both Curt and Yoav ought be be explored. If it turns out that they, in fact, hinder new development of needed features, then I may think about changing my vote. For now, let's try not to cause unnecessary incompatibilities.
