The log4j team is happy to announce the availability of log4j version
1.3alpha8. It can be downloaded from:
http://logging.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi
This version contains many changes to bring it back to better compatibility
with log4j version 1.2.X, and more changes are planned for the upcoming
alpha9 release as well. Users are encouraged to test this version with
custom code that they have previously written for log4j version 1.2.X and to
report any issues to the log4j dev email list. Please use your own judgement
with this release, as it is an alpha release. We would suggest you use it
for evaluation purposes only since more changes are planned.
Curt Arnold, one of the committers leading the compatibility charge, is

Compatibility is a major goal for the current work on version 1.3. Full
compatibility may not be achievable with the addition of new features or
critical bug fixes, but it should be much better than it has been with
previous releases of version 1.3. Remaining issues will be documented so
affected users can deal with the differences.
Once the major compatibility issues have been addressed, focus for the 1.3
release will shift to api/code review and solidifying the code for beta and
release. The current plan calls for a release in mid 2006 timeframe.
