realized that it might also be helpful to know that my pattern looks like this:
%d{MM/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:mm} - [%-5p] - %m%n
And that the exception goes away if I remove the padding:
%d{MM/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:mm} - [%p] - %m%n
