If you do not include one of the exception converter formats in the pattern the
pattern layout acts as if %xEx was specified. Simply change your pattern to end
with %ex instead. This behavior is documented at
http://logging.apache.org/log4j/2.x/manual/layouts.html#PatternLayout.
