I sent an email to the log4j list...
Here are the versions I am using:
OpenJDK 1.7.0_71 (centos 6 64 bit)
jackson-annotations-2.4.4.jar
jackson-core-2.4.2.jar
jackson-databind-2.4.2.jar
log4j-api-2.1.jar
log4j-core-2.1.jar

I had netcat listening on port 5000, outputting to a file shows the same
behavior.
