According to a Kafka project member, using a newer version of the Kafka client
library with an older Kafka server is not supported. I added a note about that
in our documentation (it is not very well documented in the Kafka docs).
Given that Kafka server 0.8.2.2 is still in use, we should probably keep this
workaround for a while and not depend on newer Kafka client library.
