{{RollingFileManager.releaseSub()}} is indeed called, but it holds a 
{{CompositeTriggeringPolicy}}, which does not stop the nested policies because 
it does not override the {{stop()}} method inherited from {{AbstractLifeCycle}}:

        this.state = LifeCycle.State.STOPPED;
        return true;
    }

And the change also still breaks existing code, because the 
{{TriggeringPolicy}} interface was changed. All artifacts using Log4j2 would 
have to be recompiled, including the transitive dependencies.
