The only explanation I can think of is that, before the initialization of
the log4j happens your following code is getting executed, hence you see the
message.
public final static Category cat = Category.getInstance("mycategory");
Please bare in mind that is only a warning. If you want this to go away,
then please initialize the log4j through a initialization servlet which is
loaded before your servlet.
