I wanted a log analysis tool that provided more powerful features than
LogFactor 5 or Chainsaw currently supported (regular-expression based
color and display filters, JTabbedPane-based panels that could be
docked/undocked).

So I started developing the tool, taking advantage of the original
Chainsaw's code where it made sense.

At some point, the Log4J folks suggested I contribute this code to the
Log4J project, committing it to the log4j-sandbox module.

I contributed the first version and Paul Smith rolled up his sleeves and
jumped in, helping implement features we felt were important, both to
our day-to-day work and to others who may need a similar tool. Later,
Chainsaw V2 was moved from the sandbox to the core project and they
invited Paul and myself to become committers.

I also worked to make Chainsaw accessible by other frameworks, so I
contributed receivers which make the Log4J framework (and Chainsaw)
accessible by folks outside the Log4J framework.

To date, with the help of folks on the various projects, Chainsaw can
now receive events from these frameworks:

* Log4Perl
* Log4Net
* Log4Cxx (c++)
* Log4CPlus (not yet in the CVS tree I believe)
* Log4PHP
* JDK1.4's util.logging framework

There's even a Log4R (ruby) version in the works.

If anyone has an interest in contributing code to the main Log4J project
or this latest version of Chainsaw, please do. That's why the sandbox
exists - for interested folks to get a chance to contribute without
worrying about impacting the core.

I hope this answers your questions,

Scott

Hi Scott, Hi Paul
So I am looking at chainsaw and it looks great. I was using LogFactor
until now but I feel I should go with Chainsaw.
Is it possible to get an historic point of view on Chainsaw. For example
Why did you guys decide to work on chainsaw as opposed to logFactor ?
Thank you for your answer
