I don't think this is a problem with log4j, more of an issue with the way Windows handles renaming open files (or perhaps the way Java does it).
I just avoid the problem by not keeping log files open overnight, or just copying to another location before opening them. Kind of like the joke where the guy goes to the doctor and says "it hurts when I do this", and the doctor goes, "then don't do that." :) Seriously though, if you are in a production environment on Windows, you can find yourself missing some log messages if you run into this so it is certainly something to be careful to avoid.
