Hi, Wow, that's more like it! It is true that I did look around for a while though so maybe you could market it a bit more :) I think loads of people will like this tool with the popularity of Log4J. I would probably put this as a top level product myself but that's just me ;)
Shame that I cannot get hold of a ZIP of the sources. My company firewall will not allow me to connect through the CVS port...will have to grab it at home tonight. I am running v1 it would seem because I was able to download log4j.1.2.8 sources as a ZIP file. I see that v2 is in 1.3. I did get Chainsaw 1 working with the Ant script because I was able to download the source ZIP. It's going to be really useful for us to have this nicer view of our logs and Chainsaw 2 looks fab...will get tonight and bring in to work and let you know how I get on... Thanks for coming back to me, ADC. -----Original Message----- From: Scott Deboy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 14 January 2004 16:06 To: Log4J Users List Subject: RE: Chainsaw GUI seems to be different to those I have seen ... am i using v2? Hi Allistair, Sorry to hear it hasn't been seamless to get going. We will be working to improve Chainsaw's documentation. We probably haven't advertised very well but there is a Chainsaw page with information here: http://logging.apache.org/log4j/docs/chainsaw.html An easy way to tell if you are using Chainsaw v2: Chainsaw v2 is a a tab-based UI and a has a 'welcome' tab (the contents of the 'welcome' tab say Chainsaw V2). Also, there should be a help-about chainsaw v2 menu item. There is an ant script available from the 'installation' section of the link I provided. If you copy the install-chainsaw.xml ant script to your local filesystem and run 'ant -f install-chainsaw.xml' from a console, it should download everything you need and start Chainsaw automatically. There is a tutorial available on the 'welcome' tab. Click 'tutorial', and a window will pop up, and select 'start tutorial'. That will generate sample events and you can try filtering, sorting, colorizing, etc.. Regarding your previous questions: 1. The link I provided and the tutorial are probably the best source of Chainsaw v2 information currently available. If you have other questions, feel free to ask. We'll work to improve this. 2. In Chainsaw v2, if you load an xmllayout-formatted log file, all of the events for that file will be loaded on their own tab, based on the filename. You can load multiple log files and they will each get their own tab. If you load the same log file twice, you may get duplicate events in the tab (hit ctrl-space to clear the events for the appropriate tab prior to re-loading the log file). Chainsaw v2 can't display events as they're written to a file ('tail'). If you have a problem loading a log file and you don't mind sending it to me, feel free to send it to me via email directly and I'll look into it. Thanks for trying it out, feel free to send comments/feedback/questions as you have them.. Hi All, My first experience with finding out how on earth to install/get Chainsaw have not been great. I don't consider digging around on mail archive boards to find out how to install good software to be very useful. Nevertheless I did manage to find some threads that have allowed me to compile and build and run Chainsaw. I have since solved my last problem with the 0 events loaded. I did not realise I needed an XMLLayout (again another hidden post on a mailing list archive). The GUI that I have in front of me is all grey. Earlier in my searching for info on Chainsaw I noticed the GUI had icons for the severity levels and looked a whole lot more usable. I am beginning to suspect I have Chainsaw 1 and not 2 but do not know how that happened since I got the source code from the CVS? Could someone shed any light at all on this?
