Try using CVSGrab, a nifty little util that interacts with CVSWeb over http to retrieve cvs projects.
http://cvsgrab.sourceforge.net/ I'd send you a link to the log4j mailing list archive posts in which we've discussed this in the past, but the search feature at marc.theaimsgroup.com seems to be broken at the moment.
