It appears that log4j 1.3 has that functionality. The API docs for
RollingFileAppender have the following example:
<appender name="ROLL" class="org.apache.log4j.rolling.RollingFileAppender">
<rollingPolicy class="org.apache.log4j.rolling.TimeBasedRollingPolicy">
<param name="FileNamePattern" value="/wombat/foo.%d{yyyy-MM}.gz"/>
</rollingPolicy>
<layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout">
<param name="ConversionPattern" value="%c{1} - %m%n"/>
</layout>
</appender>
See the docs for more specifics of what is supported.

Subject: DailyRollingFileAppender and logrotate?
Are any of the log4j developers familiar with logrotate?
It would be a nice RFE to have DailyRollingFileAppender be compatible
with the fuctionality from logrotate.
Specifically gzip compression, mailing list files, and deleting older
log files.
