Are you sure the server and client apps are both using 
the same version of log4j?  Your properties look fine,
and I know it's possible to do what you're trying to,
because I do it all the time.  The EOF just means other
side closed the connection, perhaps because it exited or 
perhaps explicitly.  Have you tried turning on log4j.debug?
