There was some discussion and activity in October on a
MultiFileAppender that would address that use case and a project was
started in the sandbox to work on that, but it got temporarily
sidelined by other demands. I think that would eventually be the
best means to accomplish your goal, but it is not yet functional and
others may have currently working suggestions. You may want to
review the log4j-dev archives for MultiFileAppender for the
discussions and description of the sandbox project.
