Log4j predates Sun's implementation by quite a bit so lots of projects use it. Most people prefer log4j's feature set but if all you need is rudimentary logging Sun's implementation has the advantage of simplicity. You might also look at the commons logging wrapper that provides compatibility with both: http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/logging/
