asynchronous logging is basically "fire and forget". asynchronous means it is not blocking on the submission of the log message.

JMSAppender is definitely for real time use - you can receive the messages from the jms server with very little latency, but if there are communications bottlenecks or interruptions, you will still receive the messages (albeit delayed).

JMSAppender is one of the mechanisms available for remoting your log events. It also is an easy mechanism for aggregating or merging
your log events from multiple servers.
