It may not be unreasonable, but it has never been imposed, I'm afraid. Some of the layouts and formatters out there may not be thread-safe. If I'm taking away one thing of the discussion between Dominik and yourself it is that log4net's internals would look different if done today *and* the people that are here today don't really know why certain design decisions have been taken.
