The website documentation is actually too recent. Long pattern names are
a new feature that were not available in log4net 1.2 beta8. The website
documentation is incorrect because it was rebuilt at the time of the
move to apache. We hope to rectify this situation shortly.

The documentation in the download zip is correct for that version.
