Fully agree with you. I'm aware that this isn't an easy feature to implement.
It would be less fast too (don't know whether this matters or not).
In case you want to keep full backwards compatibility I wouldn't mind having to
enable the "new" behaviour.
A thought I came across:
Instead of parsing the file paths/names maybe the file creation date could be
used ...
