For future reference, the relevant patch can be found at [1]. It consists of
removing the line which set the property "mail.smtp.auth" to true within the
if(isisSTARTTLS()) branch in SMTpAppednerBase class.

Tests on pixie (postfix) show that for authentication disabled server, setting
the aforementioned property results in
