David, thanks for pointing out that FindBugs signal potential sync problems in logback. However, from what you describe, I'd be very surprised if sync issues mentioned by FindBugs were related to the problem you are having.

I suspect that only the code for file locked is relevant. I can create a short test application doing file locking. Could you try it in your environment to see if you can reproduce the locking?
