I see at 3 possible approaches. 1) Move support for Gaffer (the groovy lang configurator for logback) to a different project/module. This cannot be done in 1.2 for backward compatibility reasons. 2) Drop Gaffer. In logback 1.3, since there were many moving parts already, Gaffer was dropped with the hope that it could be reintroduced later. Again, this approach is not applicable to the 1.2.x series. 3) In the logback 1.2 series, update the compiler used by Gaffer to a more recent version which might solve the incompatibility problems.
