I ) Title: Post-Doctoral Grant in Logic Field of knowledge: Logic Project title: The three-valued logic of Charles Peirce: systemics, self-organization and non-classical logics Working area: Logic and Epistemology, Philosophy Principal Investigator: Itala M. Loffredo D'Ottaviano Unit/Institution: Centre for Logic, Epistemology and the History of Science (CLE), State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil Summary: This post-doctoral research project intends to analyze the possible contributions of Charles Peirce's trivalent logic, as presented his manuscripts of 1909, in order to elucidate the Peircean concept of frontier, from the perspective of systems theory and the theory of self-organization. The aim is also to analyze the possible characterization of his logic, not only as the first conceived system of many-valued logic in the literature but also as a system of paraconsistent and paracomplete logic in the contemporary sense, characterizing it as a possible logic underlying the theory of self-organization. In this regard, Peirce's role as a precursor of non-classical logics in general, and specifically of many-valued, paraconsistent and paracomplete logics, will be investigated. II) Title: Post-doctoral grant in complex systems and information theory Field of knowledge: Epistemology, Complex systems and Information Theory Project title: Language as a self-organized system: linguistic and epistemological perspectives Working area: Epistemology and Linguistics - Philosophy Principal Researcher: Maria Eunice Quilici Gonzalez Unit/Institution: Centre for Logic, Epistemology and the History of Science (CLE), State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil Partner Institution: Faculty of Philosophy and Sciences, State University of São Paulo “Júlio Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), Campus Marília Partner Institution Representative: Maria Eunice Quilici Gonzalez Summary: This project will investigate the epistemological status of linguistic/informational knowledge from the interdisciplinary point of view of self-organization theory, which characterizes language as a complex system. The project's principle objectives are: 1) to analyze the relevance of self-organization theory for the study of natural languages; 2) to research the implications of the complex systems approach to language for epistemology and the concept of information. The two fellowship positions are part of the thematic research project entitled "Systemics, Self-Organization and Information", whose main objective is the investigation of the epistemological status of processes of self-organization in the field of complex systems. It is expected that the grant recipient will: (1) Participate in the regular seminars, meetings and events of the CLE Interdisciplinary Research Group on Self-Organization; (2) maintain regular meetings with the principal researcher responsible for the project; (3) autonomously perform research in archives and research centers; (3) autonomously prepare scientific papers; (4) submit the regular reports required by FAPESP; (5) commit to exclusive dedication to the development of the proposed research project, and not receive outside salary or remuneration except under the conditions outlined in resolution PR Nº 05/2012 (available on the FAPESP website, www.fapesp.br/7090. Candidate Requirements: (1) Possess a PhD for less than seven years; (2) have developed research in the project area; (3) be proficient in the Portuguese or English language; (4) be available to reside in Brazil. Selection Process: The candidate selection will be carried out in two steps: the first step is an assessment of the candidate by analysis of documents submitted by the candidate; the second stage is a personal interview. Required documentation for application: (1) A cover letter in which the applicant justifies his or her interest in the project; (2) a current academic CV; (3) a copy of the candidate's PhD degree; (4) two letters of recommendation. Inscription of Candidates and deadline: Candidates should submit their documentation by email to the CLE department secretary [email protected] Registration will be open from February 10th, to March 30th, 2013. Result: The result of the selection process will be announced electronically on May 6th, 2013. Duration of Financial Support: The post-doctoral grant will be valid for 24 months from the date of implementation.
