The Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences
at the University of Salzburg seeks applications for a doctoral position in
philosophy of science and/or logic. The appointment is for 30 hours per week
and will be made within the Austrian B1 salary scheme. (Salary is at least €
26.901,00 per annum as detailed in the "Kollektivvertrag für die
ArbeitnehmerInnen der Universitäten".) This is a fixed term appointment for
four years, and the starting date is 1 October 2014.

The main tasks of the appointee will be the completion of the dissertation
under the supervision of Professor Charlotte Werndl. The research should use
analytic methods to address philosophical questions. The topic of the
dissertation is any topic in philosophy of science or logic. Professor
Charlotte Werndl is especially interested in philosophy of climate science,
evidence and philosophy of statistics, philosophy of physics (in particular,
statistical mechanics), philosophy of mathematics, and topics in general
philosophy of science, such as determinism, confirmation and
underdetermination. However, dissertation proposals in other areas of logic
and philosophy of science are welcome as well.

The appointee is also expected to teach two hours per semester (from the
third year onwards) and to assist in administration. The successful
candidate will have a Masters degree in philosophy, philosophy of science or
logic. Excellent English skills and an interdisciplinary background are
desirable.

The Department of Philosophy in Salzburg is known for its analytic, formal
and interdisciplinary approach to philosophy. The logic and philosophy of
science unit is led by the newly-appointed Professor Charlotte Werndl
(formerly at the London School of Economics). Christopher Gauker (presently
at the University of Cincinnati) has been appointed to the professorship for
theoretical philosophy. A third professor is expected to be appointed within
the next few years. In affiliation with each of these positions, the
department expects to add a tenure-track professorship as well as a post-
doctoral fellowship. The appointee will join a newly vibrant department.
There will be international speakers, longer-term visitors as well as
various activities such as workshops, conferences and reading groups.

It will be expected that the dissertation be written in English. Knowledge
of German is not mandatory (although some familiarity with German will be an
advantage).

Applications should be sent to the Rector of the University of Salzburg,
Prof. Dr. Heinrich Schmidinger, Rector, University of Salzburg, Kapitelgasse
4-6, 5020 Salzburg, Austria, by 12 February 2014 (date stamp). Please
include the job reference number (GZ A 0009/1-2014) in your application. The
application should include a cover letter, a CV, academic transcripts (of
the Bachelor and Masters degree), a writing sample (no more than 10,000
words) and a description of the applicant's research interests and possible
dissertation topics. (Applicants need not commit themselves to particular
dissertation projects in advance.) Two letters of recommendation should be
sent directly to Professor Charlotte Werndl ([email protected]).
Interviews are expected to take place in early April 2014.

The University of Salzburg especially encourages female scholars to apply.
Given equal qualification, female scholars will be preferred. Severely
physically challenged individuals are also especially encouraged to apply.
