The Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium opens a PhD position for up to 24 months fully funded research in the context of a research project titled “Relevance criteria in entailment, explanation and counterfactuals: a unifying procedural approach”.
STARTING DATE October 1st, 2016. JOB DESCRIPTION The researcher will work on a project titled “Relevance criteria in entailment, explanation and counterfactuals: a unifying procedural approach”. The aim is to model the meaning and use of what we call arrow statements: entailment statements (A entails B), explanation statements (A explains B) and counterfactual conditionals (if A had been true then B). An elegant procedural method will be developed to obtain and evaluate arrow statements with a specific focus on the relevance aspects of such statements, i.e. the premises (resp. explanantia, antecedents) have to be relevant for the conclusion (resp. explanandum, consequent) and vice versa. The project applies non-classical logic (relevance logics) and automated reasoning to problems in the philosophy of language. The project leaves a lot of space for creative and exploratory work by the researcher. The researcher will do her/his research in English at the CEFISES research center for Philosophy of Science and Society of the Institut supérieur de philosophie in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Peter Verdée will be the supervisor of the researcher’s PhD project. PROJECT DURATION The project will run for 24 months with a possible 24-months extension. SALARY Around 1800 euro net monthly REQUIREMENTS * Master degree * Good English speaking, reading and writing skills * A strong interest and background in philosophy. * Acquaintance with formal philosophy/philosophical logic research * Acquaintance with relevance logic is a plus * A good mastering of the philosophy of language is a plus.
