Thanks for your response.  I recently downloaded Maxima and started playing 
with it.  I have been through a few tutorials, but have not even scratched the 
surface so far.  I think it will be a good while before I am ready to use it in 
LON-CAPA problems.  ☺

Hi Gene,

Certainly if you use a formularesponse problem with the default grading (in 
Maxima), then you can set problems with complex number answers. For example, 2 
+ 3*%i (%i is the imaginary unit in Maxima).
