Todd,

The reason for this behavior is that there is a "Table of Contents" item in the 5th folder of the top level in this particular course.

When you display the Course Contents, LON-CAPA detects that you are displaying /adm/navmaps (i.e., Table of Contents) and opens the folder containing that item.

However, when LON-CAPA renders the Contents listing it suppresses display of any /adm/navmaps items it finds, so you end up with this strange behavior: the folder is opened, but the resource which caused it to be opened -- a "Table of Contents" item -- is not actually displayed in the listing of items in the folder.

A solution, as Course Coordinator, is to click the wrench icon to the right of the 5th folder of the top level. That will display the contents of the folder in the Course Editor. Then click the "Remove" link to remove the "Table of Contents item from the folder.

If an instructor decides to include a "Table of Contents" item in a course the usual practice would be to include it as the first item in the course. However, as long as the "Table of Contents" item is included in the top level of the course, you'll not see this strange behavior.

Anyway I have filed and assigned myself bug 6823 to eliminate this behavior in a future LON-CAPA release, so that regardless of the location of a "Table of Contents" item included in the course structure, the folder containing it will not be shown as open.

Hi Hon-Kie,

Thanks for the idea, but I don't believe that's the issue. I should have
been more specific. The first item in course is just a jpg image. I
believe that seems to work fine, as it is the first thing that students see
when they choose the course. And this jpg is in the "top level".

Also, when viewing a resource inside some folder, I can then hit "contents"
and I get the expected contents listing with all folders closed except for
the folder tree containing the just-viewed resource.

But if I hit "contents" again, I see the expected content listing EXCEPT
for this one folder, which is the 5th folder of the top level, which has
been expanded to show its contents. All other top-level folders (both
before and after) are closed. This state (with the mysterious 5th folder
open) seems to be the default contents listing.

I can send a screen-shot to those who are interested, but don't want to
attach it here.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Todd

Hi,

Under course editor the first item on the list is displayed when you click
on contents. It is probably pointing to the folder that you are seeing. To
show the contents the first item should be navigate contents.

Hi all,

I've just cloned a course for summer, and folks are noticing and
commenting that every time they go to course contents, there's one folder
that is always opened up. Typically, when one goes directly to course
contents all the folders are closed. I've confirmed this behavior. Any
ideas what might be causing it? I've poked around the course
configuration, but haven't yet stumbled across anything.

Thanks!
Todd
