Small companies tend to pay reasonably promptly. The larger the company, the longer they take to pay. I have dealt directly with BT and P&O. They authorise the invoice after about 29 days, but it can take 2 or 3 weeks for it to progress through their systems and get to you.
A word of warning when dealing with overseas companies. For Europe or America do not even start the work until you have a signed contract specifying everything, including the payment terms. Without a signed bit of paper they will accept your work but never pay, claiming that there is no contract. For Africa and Asia, double the price and ask for a 50% deposit. You will never get the other 50%, so forget it.
